Appearance is white amorphous powder with a relative density of 4.50(15℃) and a melting point of 1 580℃. Because of the high refractive index (1.63~1.65), the color is white and has a certain shading power. It is almost insoluble in water, ethanol and acid, and soluble in hot sulfuric acid. easily mixed with potassium permanganate, calcium carbonate or metal nitrate. Can be reduced to barium sulfide at high temperature with carbon.
It is an important basic chemical raw material, mainly used as raw materials or fillers for paint, ink, plastics, rubber and battery ; surface coating agent for printing paper and copper paper ; sizing agent for textile industry ; glass products as a clarifier, can play the role of defoaming and increasing luster.
It can also be used as protective wall material for anti-radiation, also used in porcelain, enamel and dye industries, and is also the raw material for making other barium salts.
